2. THE SHADOWS ADVANCE

 Soundtrack 2
A New Situation, by Todd James

As your party sifts through the wreckage of the town square, the site of some unknown carnage, there are parts of your mind you feel malfunctioning. Synapses are firing, memories stirring, but they are echos of water in a deep dark well and you can make no sense of it. The ringing in your ears grows louder when you try to focus on these specters of memories. Everything, the corpses, the buildings, the large stone of black glass, even the carcass on top of the stone, the others walking around, all of it is familiar. But who and what they are is on the other side of a chasm too far to cross.

In the relative silence of the scene comes an ear-splitting sound. You flinch in surprise. The sound is of metal snapping. As though a foot thick piece of iron was broken in half under pressure. That sound decays into a high-pitched whirring sound which in turn evolves into an almost a deeper, constant resonance of metal slowly cutting through metal. The sound's source is in the Northwest.

    Accounting:

    Moses's AC drops to 9.

    Inventory:

Celexis - A rusted pocket knife in one hand, an ancient key of black metal on his person.

Morn-Start - A brown clay stone in one hand, a slate tablet in the other hand.

Moses - A skull helmet on his head, a femur bone club in one hand, a silvery blue metal egg under one arm.

Winter - A small key and plastic rectangle on his person. A shard of black glass in his hand.

[IC] The stout piranha-man gazes to the Northwest, flinching at the metallic cutting sound. A green mist rises from the horizon in that direction, as well as a sour, earthy stench on the breeze. Moses turns to face Orthus, Celexis, and Winter, and raises his voice for the benefit of Mickey and Morn-Start in Building 2.

"Ladies, gentlemen, and others!" says Moses, raising high his bone. "What say we investigate the strange sounds from the Northwest? My curiosity is piqued, and that direction lies opposite from the unsettling winged creatures to the East!"

[IC] Upon hearing the snap and the whir, Mickey knew the cat droid had a point. Despite the fact he was terrified, and despite the fact that every single hair in his disgusting matted fur coat was telling him to hide, he needed a weapon. And he needed to follow this wise cat droid, despite the fact he was a rat.

"You're right. I'll find you weapon, sir. Sorry to be disrespectful," said the left head. "Yeah. What he said. Also, what the fuck was that?" said the right head.

And then Mickey rushed out of the building to begin searching the graveyard of bodies outside the room for a suitable weapon for both himself and his new cat droid friend. And to use his nose and listen closely for anything that might cause harm to his new friend.

Yes. Sorry about that. You were able to find an old, worn screwdriver. You also found a ring off the hand of one corpse. The ring has a signet on it.

    1. Studying the tablet closer you notice a drawing has been crudely scratched into its surface. It depicts a figure with a hairy body, it's arms raised up above its four heads. There are lines scratched outside the figure to make it look like light or some kind of energy emanates from the creature.

  5. [IC] Almost as soon as the Fish Headed scavenger begins a speech of some sort, Winter Blackford senses fast approaching movement from the western building. First a gigantic sound blast from the North West, then a speech from the town center and now this fast moving body?! A distraction!? A trap!

    Man Head: “A SETUP MEATHEAD!”

Meat Head: “NOT MEATHEAD. WE GO!”

Winter hobbles quickly towards the northern most building (buidling 1) away from these shifty scavengers in the center of town, and the strange movement from the west.

The building looms above you. Its shadow is large. It is constructed of brick and appears in a much better state than the other buildings. It has a feeling of an office. There is one step to a portal in the center of the front facade. There is no door, just darkness leading inside the structure.

[IC] Winter Blackford approaches the buildings portal, quickly checks his 6 o’clock, then steps inside the dark interior of building 1.

[OoC] Can I use thermal vision to check the dark interior for any potential enemies or traps?

    ReplyDelete
  7. [@WINTER]

You can indeed. You eyes adjust to the darkness. The interior is a large, rectangular open space interrupted by four support columns. There are two staircases at either end of the room both leading up to a balcony. On the balcony is a statue. It's been fabricated by found materials: junk, scraps of metal, pieces of wood, plaster, and burlap. It is about 8 feet tall and is a representation of a creature with four heads.

From the Northwest, the direction of the loud sounds, you—those of you out in the open—see several shapes moving toward you. They are low to the ground and moving very quickly. As they approach details of their features become clearer. They have large feline heads, the size of a human. They have a harness around their heads with blinders on each side of their eyes, forcing them to look in one direction. Some have blades attached to the harness. Others have metal dentures fastened to their mouths. Some have no eyes; their eye sockets sewn shut. Their bodies are about a meter long and are tubular. Their bodies are encased in chitinous sections of an exoskeleton. They have thousands of fast-moving tiny legs beneath them. (See Fig. P1 C1)

Looking closely at the statue you see it's metal pieces have been fused together with welds. The other materials are either glued or nailed together to make the statue. What you infer from its construction is it was built with love, care, and reverence, in spite of the informal materials. When you touch the statue with both hands the ringing in your ears becomes a large presence in your mind. It splits into two distinct tones. One a lower pitch, the other higher each one residing in a different hemisphere of your brain.

There are no buttons to be seen, nor levers, speakers, or traps. But you do notice there is a spherical shaped object in the centre of the torso of the statue. It doesn't look like any of the other materials which comprise the statue.

    [OOC]

@everyone here. Just a note on Mickey: He's kinda tough to play. He's extremely slow. And he's got a will of 3. Not sure what this means, exactly, but I'm playing him as passive. He's a follower. He's not going to take the initiative on most things, but if you ask him to do something, he'll pretty much do it over and over again. Think of him like a golden retriever. That said, Mickey has a pretty high intelligence and constitution. He's kinda savant-ish with zero self esteem. Has a sense for technology, but no idea he has a sense for technology. Sorry to be so transparent, but Mickey's rolls just keep him from being a standard hack and slash character or someone I feel can move the plot forward aggressively. That said, have fun taking advantage of his many flaws!

How I'm playing Moses the Piranha-Man: His appearance is obviously scary and intimidating, so Moses tries to put others at ease by being overly friendly and cheerful. He's a "team player," and tries to foster group cohesion. That being said, he is a piranha and has a voracious appetite for meat, but does his best to not eat his friends. We all have our cross to bear.

You hold the plastic rectangle up to your eyes. There seems to be something printed on it. It's printed in black ink. But since the plastic is matte black and the ink for the writing is shiny, you can see the type when you twist it and the light reflects on the ink. It appears to not only be in a language you can't read, but you can't even recognize. The alphabet is illegible. Each letter form is made of a combination of a two to four lines of the same length. There appears to be about four words on the piece of plastic.

[IC] Winter is too anxious now, with these hippies and their razor worms chanting outside. He decides it's best to leave this object for later attention. He tucks the plastic object away for now.

[IC] "Morn-Start, a smashing idea! Mickey, hop on the shoulders of our good two-headed meat-man here, and do your best impression of a god. I will play the role of high priest, with my ceremonial skull helmet and bone scepter."

[IC] Winter kneels and hunches over making an easy mount for his new companion Mickey.

Man Head: "Go easy Mickey. Pull my hair and I'll rip your nipples off"

Meat Haed: "Nice rat-man. Not listen to him jokes"

"It's okay. I hate it when people pull my hair, too"

Mickey hops on Winter's back. The red ring on his finger shines in the light.

[IC] Morn-Start stands opposite what ever side Moses stands of our new God. holding his slate tablet out in front of him like a bible being read

"Rejoice workers and companions hear Moses speak as we praise or New God reborn in this wasteland to bring us light, Bzzzt--rzip beep-lo fat meals!! this message has been brought to you by Morn-Start and is subsidiary's, Start your morning right, Morn-Star! [IC] After pushing aside the barricade with one free foot Winter exits the building, Mickey swaying to and fro on top his shoulders. With his arms up raised in a salute, Winter addresses the Men and their companion creatures.

Man Head: “Oh my faithful peasant worshipers, LISTEN TO YOUR GOD! Give us your attention or give us your LIFE! Tell us what has happened here in this town square! Tell us that this was not your doing! Tell us that this was not done in my name! TELL US!”

Meat Head chanting: “Worship! Attention! Life! My Name! Tell us! TELL US!”

[Ooc] Does there appear to be a leader or one who is closest who might respond? If so, we direct our questions at him but loud enough for all to hear.

There doesn't seem to be any discernible leader among the mass of men. But there are several now who are within 20 meters or so of the door you emerge from.

  43. [MOSES]

[IC] Moses follows four-headed Winter+Mickey out the door, holding his blue steel egg and long bone. He presents the egg held high in front of him, glittering in the sunlight, and waves his bone in strange, ceremonial arcs over his head. Staying close to Winter+Mickey, he waddles in front of his companions and clears his gills. "Your god has returned! Here, now, and in the flesh! OBEY him!" croaks Moses. "Tell the four-headed god what has happened here!" The teeth in his skull helmet rattle as Moses gesticulates wildly with his bone. "And tell me, His high priest, what tribute do you offer?"

  44. [@WHOLE PARTY]

This seems like a very opportune time to start a new post since you guys have evolved the situation at hand. (I love what you guys are doing by the way—holy shit!).

Let's do some Accounting and Inventory first. And if there's anything I left unresolved, let me know.

    [INVENTORY and STATUS]

MICKEY - On top of WINTER's back to create a simulacrum of the Four-Headed God, brandishing the red ring. Left the screwdriver in the statue to get the sphere out.

MORN-START - The blackjack in one hand and slate tablet in the other, holding it up for all the men to see. Also, yelling at the crowd.

MOSES - Wearing the skull as a helmet and holding the femur bone as a scepter, attempting to act as a cleric or holy priest for the

WINTER - Has MICKEY on top of his shoulders or on his back to creat the Four-Headed God. Still has the smaller steel key with the ring and plastic piece. Gave the sphere from the statue to Celexis to work on with his key. Left the black stone shard in the building by the sculpture (let me know if this is incorrect).

CELEXIS - Has the sphere and an ancient key.

    [ACCOUNTING]

I don't think you guys had any shift in your AC or HP or other stats.

    1. [WINTER FROM A FEW MOVES AGO] "Winter tucks the sphere under his huge arm and retrieves the black glass shard from the ground. Returning to the ground floor where his new companions gather, Winter tosses the sphere to Celexis."

[OOC] Winter has the shard in his hand, unless that needs a roll or something.

    2. [MICKEY FROM A FEW MOVES AGO] "Mickey lets the screwdriver hit the floor before picking it up. He's usually not so good at the catching and throwing."

[OOC] Winter made a point of returning the screwdriver to Mickey, so he should have it.

    3. Right! Thanks for remembering that stuff. I thought I missed something there.

      [REVISED INVENTORY]

MICKEY - On top of WINTER's back to create a simulacrum of the Four-Headed God, brandishing the red ring. Has the screwdriver tucked in his jeans.

WINTER - Has MICKEY on top of his shoulders or on his back to creat the Four-Headed God. Still has the smaller steel key with the ring and plastic piece. Gave the sphere from the statue to Celexis to work on with his key. Has the black stone shard in one hand.

    4. [OoC] Sounds great, Ben. Your game has been amazing!! The maps, images, everything. Those cat-worms really put the fear in me when they showed up.

Also, Moses has his steel egg, so he would be:
